Why Pet Grooming Is Important

The type of grooming your pet needs all depends on his or her age, breed, and health. Failure to groom a pet can lead to a variety of difficulties for the animal. A pet that has not been groomed is more likely to ingest a harmful substance if it ends up in its fur. Your pet can also become sick from bacteria living on the coat. A matted coat can be irritating and even painful to a pet. Dogs with thick coats will need their hair trimmed for the summer to avoid overheating. If your dog is prone to shedding, then seeing our professional groomer may be beneficial. Proper grooming can help decrease the level of shedding your dog experiences.

In addition to the main body, a pet’s ears, eyes, teeth, and nails or claws need to be tended to. Eyes that are not cleaned can fill with mucus. Teeth can suffer from a buildup of tartar if not cleaned. Dogs are prone to using their toes for walking. This is referred to as digitigrade walking. When nails become too long, the ability to walk comfortably on the toes becomes difficult and the gait can suffer. Arthritis and an uneven gait can result, causing your dog to be uncomfortable. Cat claws left untreated will begin to curve and stab the pad causing an infection. 

What to Expect

During a standard grooming and bathing appointment, your pet will be bathed and brushed, and then his or her coat will be trimmed. If your pet's nails are long, we can trim them as well.

Different pets have different needs, with some pets requiring a lot more trimming and brushing than others. We'll let you know if your pet has any special bathing needs at the start of the appointment.

How Often Should My Pet Be Groomed?

Most pets should be professionally groomed at least once annually and certain dog breeds need to be groomed far more often.

The length of time between appointments depends on:

• Type or breed of pet
• How fast your pet's coat grows
• Pet’s susceptibility to matting
• Time of year

How Can I Maintain My Pet’s Coat at Home?

Brush your pet's coat on a regular basis, but avoid excessive bathing. Bathing your pet too often can cause dry and flaky skin.
